One-at-a-Time Therapy: Meaningful Change Doesn't Have to Take Years

Short-Term Therapy in Ontario
Many people assume therapy is a long-term commitment. While long-term therapy can be valuable, it's not always necessary.
At Matt Henderson Psychotherapy, I offer a short-term approach called One-at-a-Time Therapy. The idea is simple: meaningful change can happen surprisingly quickly - sometimes in as little as one session - when we focus on what matters most right now.
Rather than deciding in advance that therapy will last for months or years, we take things one session at a time. At the end of each conversation, we'll check in together about what was helpful, what has changed, and whether another session would be useful.
Some clients come for a single session and leave with enough clarity to move forward on their own. Others benefit from more. Most short-term therapy involves approximately 4-8 sessions, but there is no predetermined number. The goal isn't to keep therapy going longer than necessary. The goal is to provide the right amount of support for where you are right now.
Whether you're struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, self-worth, or feeling stuck, short-term therapy can help you create movement and build momentum.
What Is Short-Term Therapy?
Short-term therapy is a focused, collaborative approach that concentrates on helping you create change in the present rather than spending extensive time analyzing the past.
This doesn't mean your history is unimportant. Your experiences matter, and they shape how you see yourself and the world.
However, understanding why a problem exists is not always necessary for creating change.
Sometimes the most helpful question isn't:
"Where did this come from?"
But
"What would help right now?"
Together, we'll identify the areas of your life where you want things to be different, explore what is already working, uncover strengths and resources you may have overlooked, and develop practical ways to move toward the life you want.
Who Is One-at-a-Time Therapy For?
This approach may be a good fit if:
You're ready to make changes in your life.
You want practical support focused on the present.
You're feeling stuck and want a fresh perspective.
You have limited time or insurance coverage.
You're looking for a focused, goal-oriented approach.
Short-term therapy works best when there is a specific area of life you'd like to improve and you're willing to experiment with new ways of thinking, acting, or responding.
Who Is Short-Term Therapy Not For?
Short-term therapy is not the right fit for every situation.
You may benefit more from longer-term therapy if your goal is to:
Explore your past in depth
Understand the origins of longstanding patterns
Process complex trauma
Engage in ongoing, open-ended therapy
These goals can be incredibly valuable.
One at a Time Therapy is simply built around a different question:
"What would help most RIGHT NOW?"
If it becomes clear that a longer-term approach would better serve your needs, we'll talk about that openly and collaboratively.
My Approach to Short-Term Therapy
Rather than assuming you'll need therapy every week for months or years, we’ll take things one session at a time. Every session is approached as though it might be the only one, which helps us stay focused on what feels most important to you right now and how you can begin moving forward.
At the end of each conversation, we'll discuss whether another session would be helpful - or not. Some people return the following week. Others come back after a month. Some find they’ve gotten what they need, and don't need another session at all.
This approach helps ensure therapy remains focused on your hopes and responsive to your needs, rather than following a predetermined schedule.
While many clients attend between 4-8 sessions, there is no requirement to commit to a particular number. We simply take things one conversation at a time and focus on creating meaningful change as efficiently as possible.
My short-term work draws from Brief Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
Rather than focusing primarily on problems, we'll explore your strengths, values, resources, and the changes you'd like to see in your life.
This isn't about giving you endless homework or trying to "fix" you.
Instead, we'll work together to:
Clarify what matters most to you.
Identify the changes you want to see.
Explore times when the problem has less influence.
Recognize strengths and resources that may have gone unnoticed.
Connect with your values and preferred direction in life.
Take practical steps toward meaningful change.
It's about helping you identify what is already working, clarify where you want to go, and take meaningful steps in that direction.
Therapists may be one of the few professionals whose goal is to work ourselves out of a job.
The goal isn't to keep you in therapy forever. The goal is to help you develop the clarity, confidence, and skills you need so you can continue moving forward on your own.
Sometimes that takes months or years.
Sometimes it takes only a few conversations.
The question isn't how long therapy should last. The question is whether it's helping you create the changes that matter to you.
If you're looking for short-term therapy in Ontario, including Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph, or anywhere in the province through virtual therapy, I'd be happy to help.
